22nd Annual Backpack Giveaway a Huge Success!

On Saturday, August 9, BMAGIC hosted their 22nd Annual Backpack Giveaway at PG&E’s Hunters point site. The event saw 1,000 local residents visit the site to enjoy a day of multi-generational fun, community education, and giveaways.

The Backpack Giveaway was organized by BMAGIC, a community-service program of the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office. 750 backpacks stuffed with school supplies were distributed to San Francisco youngsters in advance of the school year. In addition, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition raffled off 70 bikes to lucky children, gave away biking equipment, and ran a bicycle-education zone.

The event included entertainment for the whole family - food trucks, a DJ, a children’s fashion show, the San Francisco Public Library’s Bookmobile, and free face painting. It also featured a community fair where 36 community organizations, non-profits, and  San Francisco city departments shared information and resources with attendees. Key participants in the fair included NFL Alumni, the Buddhist Tzu Chi Society, and Golden Gate National Parks Servies.

PG&E staff also volunteered at BMAGIC’s Backpack Giveaway. Thirteen PG&E employees distributed promotional items and program information, gave bucket rides from a line maintenance truck, and brought out a special mascot outfit to entertain the crowd.

BMAGIC’s Backpack Giveaway is only one of the community-serving events that PG&E hosts on its Hunters Point site. Upcoming events include Garden Resource Days, which distributes gardening supplies, and the Guardsmen Christmas Tree Giveaway.
